BLACK BARN

Steyning Road, West Grinstead, Horsham, RH13 8LR  Owner  Jane Gates

Our first evening visit of 2022. Self drive, car share if possible, the visit starts at 6.00pm.

Black Barn Garden was designed and planted in January, 2018. The site was cleared and only the mature trees remained. A hedgerow separating the garden from the field was removed and a large pond has been created in the southwest corner. A large gravel garden was created to the south of the barn and a terrace laid. The existing terrace at the back was increased and a large bed was created.

The courtyard garden is planted with grasses, hellebores and viburnums. Hydrangeas and other evergreen herbaceous plants additionally provide year round interest. Tulips, agapanthus and dahlias also provide seasonal interest. The gravel garden is planted prairie style and has paths throughout, leading you down the garden to the wildlife area with grass meadows, where you will discover a pampas walk, an orchard and a pond with watermeadow . The top of the garden has more bamboos, a vegetable garden with a cutting garden and extensive compost bins and chickens. There are many mature trees including three ancient oaks, where you’ll find a treehouse built amongst the folds of the tree trunks itself. There is also a small woodland area with snowdrops, primroses, wild garlic, bluebells and foxgloves. The whole garden was planted in 2018 with many home grown plants propagated from the owners previous garden.
