2024 Summer Evening Garden Visits

21st May 2024

East Clayton Farm, Washington

Storrington Road, Washington, West Sussex, RH20 4AG

Meet at 6.00pm.This is a little different from our usual garden visits, East Clayton is a 120 acre farm which, during the day, offers young people a safe space where they can learn new life skills in both horticulture and working with small animals. The site was previously a derelict farm owned by the National Trust, and is now leased to the Lonica Trust. Katy will show us the raised beds and tell us about their ‘pot to plate’ initiative. There is a sensory garden and also a separate pond which has been recently created. There is also a ‘therapeutic’ smallholding with chickens, turkeys, sheep, pigs, donkeys and goats.

Directions: Take the A24 to Worthing. Turn right at the Storrington roundabout (3rd exit), and soon after the roundabout turn right at the sign post for NT Warren Hill. The car park is up the lane on the left hand side.

The donation is £8, which goes to the Lonica Trust, and includes refreshments.

Please note if you are using the post code in a sat nav it will take you to dog kennels further along the A283 towards Storrington.

IMPORTANT – VENUE CHANGE, 23rd JULY

We are now unable to visit Mill Hall Farm on 23rd July due to health problems of the owner, for which she is very apologetic.  Lynda Eaton has arranged an alternative visit to a beautiful garden, and details are as below.

Tuesday 23rd July 2024

Tanhouse Farm,

Rusper Road, Newdigate, RH5 5BX.  Mrs N Fries

This is a country garden created by the owners since 1987.  1 acre of charming rambling gardens surrounding a 16th Century house (not open).  Herbaceous borders, small lake and stream with ducks and geese.  There is an orchard with a wild garden, and plenty of seats and benches.

Take the Horsham Road to Rusper.  As you enter the village turn left at the staggered T junction by The Star Inn, towards Newdigate (Newdigate Road, which then becomes Rusper Road).  Carry on for approx. 4 miles, past Eastwood Farm, and it is the next farm on the left, signposted Tanhouse Farm Shop.

The donation is £7 for the NGS and includes a drink and biscuits.
