We are enjoying the driest and hottest summer since records began and there has been little rain for the last six months in West Sussex but there were over 130 entries at our Horticultural Society Summer Show yesterday. We have a few enthusiasts who have green fingers and a competitive desire, without these faithful few we would have had little to interest the afternoon visitors. Our RHS judges applied their wealth of experience and knowledge to decide which entries deserved one of our many cups and awards which have been donated over the years by former HHS members. We are keeping a tradition going which provides enjoyment and an opportunity to swap horticultural advice and experiences with fellow members and enjoy a cuppa and a cake with friends old and new. We do need more entries to sustain interest and you never know if your courgettes, carrots, spuds, beans or herbs might just be the most perfect in the show. There is so much luck in growing for showing your fruit, flowers and veg, you could be the overall winner at the next show! It doesn’t cost a fortune to germinate a few select seeds and nurture them for a season, the thrill is you never really know what your produce will be like until the show day! The more entries we have the more fun there will be for our visitors.
This year we had lots of guests, friends and families who came to the show, we even had our lovely MP, Jeremy Quinn, who popped in to offer his support. Our raffle and plant sales added to the entertainment as well as helping to pay for the hall hire. We are lucky to have such a pleasant venue with easy access and parking.
This year the winners are:
Paul Dalby: Floral Bowl, Medal, President’s Cup, Ron Mitchell Cup, Garden News Shield, Founders Salver, Nora Pool Cup, Shelley Cup and last but not least the Festival Cup!
