Winter Meetings 2022-2023

4th October 2022:

Welcome back and Subs Night followed by a short talk from Maggie Weir-Wilson, a local author. Maggie will talk to us about her experiences of writing and publishing her books, the research involved and the progress of her new book on the History of Horsham Allotments.

18th October 2022: H.W. Hyde and Son

Sarah Hyde will give us a talk all about this local nursery. The Family run Nursery has been growing bulbs professionally since 1926 and moved to a new nursery in Rusper in 2019. They sell a large variety of different bulbs and will be bringing a selection for sale on the evening.

1st November 2022: Colin McFarlin – Waste Recycling

Ever wondered how West Sussex County Council manages and disposes of all your recycling and rubbish? Colin has been a Volunteer Wast Prevention Advisor with West Sussex CC for over 10 years and will talk about recycling in West Sussex, how waste is handled and organised, with many additional ways to improve your recycling.

Colin will be happy to answer any questions you have on recycling and how to deal with unusual items. Do bring along any items you are not sure about and he will be able to advise you.

15th November 2022: Owls about Town

Please note that this meeting will start at the earlier time of 7.00pm and will be in the main church. There will be an entrance fee of £3.00 for this special event.

This is a special one and a half hour meeting for the society. Andy and Zsi from Owls about Town will bring 5-6 of their friendliest owls along. There will be an informal chat regarding diet, habitat and fun facts regarding owls. You will be allowed to hold an owl on a gloved hand if you wish. Hopefully they will be able to fly a barn owl to a hand or towooo….  You would be a towitt towooo miss this meeting!

29th November 2022: Chris Stewart – The secret life of the Mole

Chris is coming to talk to us again, this time about Moles. Chris is a member of the Guild of British Mole Catchers, his talk covers all aspects of this amazing and interesting creature. He will bring along some exhibits to show us.

13th December 2022: Christmas Social

Join us for our annual Christmas Social (details to follow) and enjoy a buffet and hot and cold drinks. There will also be a Grand Christmas Raffle

10th January 2023: AGM and Quiz Night

As usual our AGM will be brief, followed by tea and cake. We will also have a Quiz and a slide show. Details for the forthcoming events and evening visits will be announced.

24th January 2023: David Hide – Good Plants

One of our Society members, David, will give us his recommendations for some must-have plants for our gardens to suit both sun and shade. David will be happy to answer questions on any difficulties and problems you have experienced with growing certain plants (and advice on pest deterrents!).

7th February 2023: Lesley Baker – “Out on a Limb”

Lesley will tell us about her work as a tree surgeon. She is a long established tree surgeon who trained with the National Trust. The talk will be followed by a short quiz, testing our knowledge by matching logs to leaves.

21st February 20223: Withypitts Dahlias

We will be having talk by Richard from Withypitts Dahlias. The talk will be filled with fun tips and techniques to help us get the very best from our dahlias. He will give us a background to creating the company. Please have your Dahlia questions ready!

Richard will bring some Dahlia tubers to sell on the evening.

7th March 2023: Inter-Society Quiz at Bolney

 This year the quiz will be hosted by Bolney Horticultural Society at :

The Rawson Hall, The Street, Bolney, RH17 5PF
